Amsonia hubrectii (Threadleaf Blue Star)
Amsonia hubrectii (Threadleaf Blue Star)
The thread-leaf amsonia (blue star) is one of our favorite fall perennials. The thread-like leaves turn a vivid yellow in the fall to usher in the cold of winter. This is a truly remarkable visual when planted en masse (large groups). Equally attractive is the spring foliage of deep green that gives ways to steel blue flowers in May with the display lasting through July here in in Delaware. The foliage remains attractive until those rich golden hues start arriving in September with October providing the big show. The foliage slowly turns to a cheddar cheese color and then amber brown by January. This prairie native is superb in mass plantings, incorporating in the perennial border, and for meadow plantings. Songbirds love playing in and around the thick foliage.
