Alcea rosea 'Nigra'

Alcea rosea 'Nigra'

The original black (dark purple) hollyhock.  The contrast between foliage and flower is what gives this stellar short-lived perennial its crown in the garden.  The blooms are amongst the deepest color in the plant world and are borne abundantly throughout the summer months.  A true beauty by itself or gingerly mixed within the landscape.  You can plant en masse (large groups) but the color is enhanced when used to compliment other colors within the landscape.  Plant next to scarlet reds, deep blues, or even oranges for best pop.  Go crazy next to white flowering plants to create a classic checkerboard look. :)
