Papaver rupifragum 'Double Tangerine Gem' Plant

Papaver rupifragum 'Double Tangerine Gem' Plant

Papaver 'Double Tangerine Gem' is exactly as its name states a double tangerine gem.  We trialed and offered this variety years ago and are bringing it back because it deserves more recognition as a garden plant.  Unlike other poppies, that go summer dormant, this variety will bloom all summer long if kept evenly moist.  Within its second year of growth, you can expect large crowns with multiple growth points that yield multiple flowering points.  The clumps remain evergreen through the winter here in Delaware and start their upward growth to bloom in April.  By late May the display is coming into peak flush with loads of those tangerine blooms on display.  Then, sporadic blooms arise through much of July and August as the older spend blooms turn into magnificent seed capsules.  These seed capsules can be used in dried arrangements.  The plants can also be trimmed back after the first heavy flush of blooms are spent to encourage a flush of blooms again toward fall.  A great choice for rock gardens, cottage gardens, and large plantings for bold color impact.
