• Plant in full sun, within a rich well-drained soil.
  • Cabbage prefers cooler temperatures and tolerates light frosts.
  • The ideal pH range is 6.7-7.2 for optimum growth and head production.
  • Lime acidic soils before planting.  Use sulphur in alkaline soil prior to planting.
  • In infertile soils fertilize plants with fish emulsifier or similar fertilizer.
  • Compost is an alternative to fertilizer if incorporated into the planting hole.
  • Rotate planting spots yearly to help eliminate disease and pest problems.
  • Check plants for pests like cabbage loopers, harlequin bugs, aphids, and cabbage worms
    throughout the growing season.
  • Avoid heavy mulches like straw or hay, which creates a habitat for slugs.  Slugs feed on
    tender leaves and can demolish a planting of cabbages quickly.
  • Deal with pests by either hand picking, spraying an Organic Rated pesticide weekly, or
    using beneficial insects for control.
