A genus of 35 species of erect annuals, biennials, and perennials. These plants occur in sunny dry spots throughout the temperate regions of Europe, Africa, and Western Asia. Commonly called the alkanet these plants have lance-shaped leaves that are sometimes covered with little hairs. They are cultivated for their tubular flowers that are normally blue or white, and are borne tight on terminal or axillary cymes.

- Grow in a well-drained spot that has been slightly enriched with organic matter and is
located in a full sun to partial shade area.
- Make sure the soil pH is within the range of 5.5 - 7.0.
- A well drained soil is essential for the life of plants during winter.
- Mulch plants with straw, hay, or shredded wood shavings.
- After flowering (about September), trim all flowering stalks back to the basal rosette of
leaves. Preventing seed production will aid in bigger plants the following year.
- If growing plants in containers mix sand with potting medium to aid in drainage.
