- Watermelons ripen only when attached to the vine. Therefore, fruit cannot develop
more of a sugar content or rich color if picked immature.
- Most melons are ripe when the tendril found next to the fruit dies off. This is not the
case of all watermelons.
- Figuring out the ripeness of a watermelon by sound is also an effective way to
determine when to harvest. A ripe watermelon makes a hollow sound, while an immature fruit sounds dense.
- To harvest ripe fruit cut the stem 1" from fruit with a pair of sharp pruners or sharp
knife.
- Fruit can be stored in a cool humid environment if not consumed right away.
