Watermelon (Citrullus vulgaris) – A member of the cumber family and close relative of the citron melon (a US native melon), watermelons are enjoyed by aboriginal people and jungle animals in the tropical jungles of Africa they call home. Through early explorations, watermelons are now dispersed throughout the world. Extensive breeding and crop selections have produced seedless cultivars, cultivars with sweeter flesh, and watermelons with different colored rinds and flesh. There is no doubt watermelon is the favorite summertime treat that has a flavorful past and a tasty future.
