- Plant in a well-drained soil high in organic matter at a pH range of 5.5 - 6.5.
- In poor soils till compost into the top 6" before planting.
- Consistently moist soil is needed to produce a quality harvest.
- A weekly application of fish emulsifier is an added benefit to boost onion growth.
- In high organic soils a dose of fish emulsifier every two weeks is an added benefit in
encouraging the plants to add girt to the bulbs.
- Mulch onions with a light sprinkling of straw mulch, to help retain soil moisture, keep
the soil cooler, and suppress weeds.
- Drip irrigation is beneficial and eliminates the fungal problems that overhead irrigation
can create.
