• Plant in a well-drained soil high in organic matter at a pH range of 5.5 - 6.5.  
  • In poor soils till compost into the top 6" before planting.
  • Consistently moist soil is needed to produce a quality harvest.  
  • A weekly application of fish emulsifier is an added benefit to boost onion growth.
  • In high organic soils a dose of fish emulsifier every two weeks is an added benefit in
    encouraging the plants to add girt to the bulbs.
  • Mulch onions with a light sprinkling of straw mulch, to help retain soil moisture, keep
    the soil cooler, and suppress weeds.
  • Drip irrigation is beneficial and eliminates the fungal problems that overhead irrigation
    can create.
